Spellbooks were introduced in the game on Update 8.2, they behave as much as an ordinary shield, as well as giving additional bonuses to increase the magician's magic level. They can only be placed in the shield slot in your Inventory.
Spellbooks can be held with just one hand, and used in place of the shield. In comparison with normal shields, the spellbook has a much lower defense, which makes it less attractive for solo hunts, but very useful when you have a team, where mages don't take hits.
To increase the defense of spellbooks, many players use a weapon that can be either a Sword, an Axe or a Club with a good attack and light, that has some defense modifier (Defense bonus).
The spellbook that offers the greatest defense is the Shoulder Plate , with 26. There are four spellbooks that are tied for the ML bonus item: the Spellbook of Ancient Arcana, Umbral Master Spellbook, Spirit Guide and Book of Lies, they give +4 to your ML when equipped.
As the Umbral Master Spellbook offers protection against various types of damage, it is considered the best spellbook for mages in the game.
